The Merita Division of Interstate Bakery Corp. was previously
cited for a violation of this Occupational Safety and Health
standard or its equivalent standard 5(a)(1) which was contained
in OSHA Inspection Number 17963943, Citation Number 1, Item
Number 1, issued on February 11, 1991.
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of
1970:  The employer did not furnish employment and a place of
employment which were free from recognized hazards that were
causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees were exposed to:
a.   The hazards associated with confined space entry such
as oxygen deficient atmosphere, hot environments,
flammable and toxic vapors, etc., in that, the employer
did not protect an employee by testing the atmosphere
inside the Baker Perkins Bread Oven #5174 before entry
to perform an inspection and maintenance, on or about
April 20, 1991 and July 8, 1991.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method
to correct this hazard is to comply with the confined space
entry program to ensure the atmosphere inside the oven
is not hazardous prior to entry by an employee.
