Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a crushing hazard during lifting of steel beams due to the beam cutting the nylon sling, thereby resulting in a falling load: a) GRACO Industries Condstuction Site, Morgantown, PA - tuflex lube sling failed when lifting a 5,500 pound, 60 foot long steel beam with sharp edges, on or about November 11, 1986. Among other method, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is by using wear pads to protect the sling from sharp edges and abrasive materials.
