Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: THE HAZARD OF BEING STRUCK BY GARBAGE CONTAINERS WHICH WERE BEING UNLOADED. ON FEBRUARY 6, 1985, AT THE UNCASVILLE, CONNECTICUT, SITE OF THE UNITED NUCLEAR CORPORATION, A LEACH TRASH/COLLECTION TRUCK WAS EQUIPPED WITH A 3/8", 6x31 WIRE (HOISTING) ROPE WHICH DID NOT MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A FACTOR OF SAFETY OF AT LEAST TWO (2) TIMES THE MAXIMUM RATED LOAD, LIFT OR PULL CAPACITY OF THE EQUIPMENT. FEASIBLE AND USEFUL METHODS OF ABATEMENT, AMONG OTHERS, ARE TO INSTALL THE CORRECT SIZE AND TYPE OF WIRE ROPE, DEVELOP AND PROVIDE FOR PERIODIC AND REGULAR INSPECTIONS AND MAINTENANCE WORK ON THE EQUIPMENT, AND KEEP RECORDS/LOGS OF ALL INSPECTIONS AND WORK PERFORMED.
