Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
a) Location:  The south side of the north wing of the apartment complex on
boom of crane.
An employee preforming maintenance on a communication device located in
the boom of the
crane was exposed to a falling/crushing hazard due to the crane operating
while maintenance was
being conducted.
One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to
not allow the operation
of equipment while maintenance is being conducted, as required by the
American National
Standard - ANSI/ASME B30.5-1982  Mobile and Locomotive Cranes.
Violation occurred on or about 11/20/97
ABATEMENT NOTE:  CSHO observed employee being removed from hazard.
