Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the potential of a fire and/or explosion created by flammable vapors: CASTING ROOM: ON OR ABOUT 1/14/02 AN EXPLOSION OCCURRED IN THE LARGE CASTING MACHINE AND ASSOCIATED VENTILATION SYSTEM. AMONG OTHER METHODS, TWO FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABEL ABATEMENT METHODS TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD ARE T0: 1.DESIGN AND INSTALL EXPLOSION RELIEF VENTING IN THE CASTING MACHINE. SEE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION "STANDARD FOR OVENS AND FURNACES" NFPA 86 SECTION 3-3. 2.INSTALL ELECTRICAL INTERLOCKS AND FLOW SWITCHES IN THE SAFETY CONTROL CIRCUIT SO THAT LOSS OF VENTILATION OR AIRFLOW IMMEDIATELY SHUTS DOWN THE CASTING MACHINE. SEE NATIONAL FIRE PROTECTION ASSOCIATION "STANDARD FOR OVENS AND FURNACES" NFPA 86 SECTION 5-5.
