Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to dangerous concentrations of carbon monoxide:
(a) Toys R Us 375 East Ave. Warwick, RI: Employees working inside the
store were
exposed to high concentrations of carbon monoxide while operating a 35 HP
gasoline powered
concrete saw, which is intended for outdoor use only unless equipped with
exhaust to the
outside.  One employee was overcome. He was treated at the scene and
transported to the
hospital. The fire department tested the air and found carbon monoxide
levels in excess of 260
parts per million (PPM).  The NIOSH exposure limit for carbon monoxide is
200 PPM  (a
maximum concentration not to be exceeded for any period of time).
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement to correct this
hazard is to
use an electric powered concrete cutter.
