General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards of fire and explosion from the storage and possible mixing of flammable liquids with oxidizing materials (organic peroxides): (a) Various locations on the plant floor, including boat assembly areas, Bombardier area, prototype area and special projects area. MEKP was routinely stored in flammable storage cabinets with flammable/organic liquids, including styrene formulations, Gelcoat formulations, turpentine, alcohol, resin formulations, reactors, adhesives, and spray solvents. (b) Outside flammable storage building: MEKP stored with flammable materials. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is the segregation and separate storage of incompatible chemicals, the use of appropriate signs designating the separate storage areas, and employee training to prevent the inadvertent common storage of incompatible materials.le
