Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of falling. a)Work site, North and West side of the building - Employees were observed working in the platforms of a Genie Lift Model A.R. 5026 and Grove Model MZ1-40 aerial lifts approximately, 18 feet in the air.The employees were not secured by a safety harness/lanyard; on or about 4/11/97. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce this hazard is to: 1.Follow the manufacturers recommended procedures while operating an aerial lift (see Grove MZ1-40 Operators Manual, page 2-13, "WEAR A BODY BELT WITH A LANYARD attached when occupying the platform." See also Genie Lift Manufacturers recommended procedures, page 2-27, 2-28, "Always wear a safety belt/lanyard when occupying the platform."), and 2.Train the employees in the proper procedures while operating aerial lifts, such as, but not limited to, the wearing of safety belts.
