Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The hazard of falling. a)Sports Authority Building, north side - Employees were observed working in the platform of a Snorkelift A50 aerial lift raised approximately 35 feet in the air. The employees were not secured by a safety harness/lanyard. On or about 5/15/97. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible method to reduce the hazard is to: 1.Follow the manufacturers recommended procedures while operating a boom supported elevating work platform (see Snorkelift Self Propelled Aerial Work Platforms Manufacturer's Safety Information Pamphlet which states: "General Operation Safety Instructions: WARNING - All platform occupants MUST wear and use an approved safety belt as required by OSHA. Attach safety belt to the platform mid rail."), and 2.Train the employees in the proper procedures while operating aerial lifts, such as, but not limited to, the wearing of safety belts.
