General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by flying objects resulting from exploding thermoplastic pipe being used for above ground compressed air transport: At this establishment, exposed PVC pipe and fittings were being used to transport compressed air throughout the shop at pressures in excess of 80 psi. PVC pipe is subject to exploding under the stress of compressed air showering employees with shards of plastic causing cuts and lacerations. Among other methods, one feasible means of abatement to correct this hazard would be to replace the PVC pipe and fittings with galvanized metal pipe and fittings as addressed in the Plastic Pipe Institute Recommendation B-1972. *** Certification and Documentation of Abatement required ***
