Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to a fire and explosion hazard created by a leaking
propane tank:
(a)Timberline Inn basement, Victor, Idaho - On or about July 15, 1997 and
at
times prior thereto, employees used open flames without performing
atmospheric testing for the presence of propane or other flammable gases.
Some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are:
1.Use a combustible gas detector or a combustible gas meter when entering a
work space to ensure it is safe.
2.Use only battery-operated flashlights that are intrinsically-safe and
approved
for hazardous atmospheres until the work space is found safe.
3.Train employees in the hazard recognition of deodorized propane and in
the
use of detection instruments.
Note:Abatement certification and supporting documentation are required for
this item.
