General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of the 38 foot long WIF 43 roof joists collapsing while working beneath the joists: At the construction site located near the corner of 20th and Broadway, Quincy, Illinois, 38 foot long WIF 43 roof joists were installed along the north side of the strip mall and were not properly fastened as they were installed nor was temporary bracing installed according to the manufactures recommendations. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard would be to follow the manufactures recommendations for properly fastening the joists as they are erected. Install rows of temporary bracing at right angles to the joist at 10 foot intervals for WIF 43 joists.ls
