Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls into elevator shaft: a)Mold Storage Area - Two story freight elevator shaft was not adequately guarded on one side to prevent employees from falling approximately 9 feet when elevator is on lower level. Side in question had only a single chain across opening. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are to guard the open sided elevator shaft according to ANSI A17.1 - 1971, Elevators, Dumbwaiters, Escalators, and Moving Walks.
