Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to serious injury while working on an elevated structure that was not capable of carrying the intended load. Among other methods one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to install the proper joist hangers to support the load. Jobsite: Elevator shaft roof. An employee while engaged in constructing a roof fell in excess of 12 feet when he stepped on a rafter that was not provided with a joist hanger and subsequently broke.
