Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to crushing injuries due to overloading of crane supporting
structures:
a.Service Area - The adequacy and capacity of the supporting structure for
the 1-
ton jib crane was not known. A feasible method of abatement would be to
have
the supporting structure checked by an engineer and limit the cranes
capacity to
correspond to the engineer's recommendation.
b.Service Area - The adequacy and capacity of the supporting structure for
the 1/2-
ton jib crane was not known. A feasible method of abatement would be to
have
the supporting structure checked by an engineer and limit the crane
capacity to
correspond to the engineer's recommendation.
c.Service Area - Employees using the lifting cradle for forklift batteries
were
exposed to possible crushing injuries due to the capacity of the lifting
cradle not
being known. One feasible method of abatement would be to have a lifting
cradle
designed and constructed with ample capacity to lift expected loads such as
forklift batteries.
