Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to: a crushing hazard.
(a)Sutphen East Corp: On August 21,1997, at 30 Sutphen Place in White
Lake,NY,
an employee of Sutphen East Corp was working underneath a fire truck in one
of the service bays. The employee was attempting to lower the rear wheels
of the
truck onto two 5 ton floor stands.The jack stands were overloaded.
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this
hazard
is at a minimum the following:
1.Make mandatory job safety practices that no employee be under a
truck/vehicle while it
is being raised or lowered.
2. When using equipment to support trucks,follow the equipment
manufacturer's
recommendations regarding load limits and proper use of such equipment.
3.Ensure that equipment used to support trucks are capable of supporting
the load imposed
upon it.
ABATEMENT CERTIFICATION IS REQUIRED.
