Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards associated with the side boom tractor operation. (a) Location - The area between Highway 213 and Pleasant Street off ramp in Methuen, MA: On or about 8/31/99, during pipelaying and welding operations, employees were exposed to possible crushing injuries due to the unexpected movement of the side boom tractor and/or the load. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE MEANS OF ABATEMENT WOULD BE TO BLOCK THE PIPE UP TO HOLD THE WEIGHT STABLE TO ELIMINATE UNEXPECTED MOVEMENT, PROHIBIT TRAVEL AROUND THE TRACTORS, AND ENSURE THE OPERATORS ARE WEARING SEAT BELTS.
