Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazards associated with the reproductive toxicant progesterone: a. Employee compounding medication containing hormones, such as but not limited to progesterone, was exposed to 15.5 micrograms/cubic meter of progesterone or 1.24 times the 8-hour time weighted exposure average recommended exposure limit (REL) of 12.5 micrograms/cubic meter as listed by a manufacturer, Upjohn. Sampling was conducted for 393 minutes on 11/24/99. The unsampled period was taken as zero exposure. b. Employee compounding medication containing hormones, such as but not limited to progesterone, was exposed to 14.6 micrograms/cubic meter of progesterone or 1.16 times the 8-hour time weighted exposure average recommended exposure limit (REL) of 12.5 micrograms/cubic meter as listed by a manufacturer, Upjohn. Sampling was conducted for 412 minutes on 11/24/99. The unsampled period was taken as zero exposure. c. Employee compounding medication containing hormones, such as but not limited to progesterone, was exposed to 6.8 micrograms/cubic meter of progesterone or 0.54 times the 8- hour time weighted exposure average recommended exposure limit (REL) of 12.5 micrograms/cubic meter as listed by a manufacturer, Upjohn. Sampling was conducted for 394 minutes on 11/24/99. "AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS...." 1. Install engineering controls with local exhaust ventilation connected to high efficiency purifying air filters, such as but not limited to glove boxes. The process should be totally enclosed preventing leakage into the work area. 2. Implementation of work practice and administrative controls. Work area access should be controlled minimizing exposure. Dry sweeping of work area prohibited 3. Development and implementation of decontamination procedures following "dusty" procedures. 4. Implementation of good hygiene practices and prohibition of eating, drinking, smoking and applying cosmetics in work area. 5. development and implementation of cleaning procedures for contaminated (or potentially contaminated) work surfaces.

"AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS...." 1. Installation of engineering controls with local exhaust ventilation connected to high efficiency purifying air filters, such as but not limited to glove boxes.
