Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to the hazard of potentially inhalating hydrogen cyanide gas.
a)On 9/8/97, Polishing Bombing Room.
Employee(s) handles sodium cyanide salt, sulfuric acid and sodium
hydroxide. A sealed
container of sodium cyanide (25 lbs) was stored above a sealed bottle of
sulfuric acid (1/2
gallon), in an open storage cabinet.  A potential hazard exposure to
hydrogen cyanide vapors
exist should cyanide salt and sulfuric acid mix together, in an event of a
chemical spill.
One feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct the hazard is to
store sodium cyanide
salt container(s) in a remote area away from any acid, acid vapors and any
incompatible
chemical.ble
