Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazard of being struck by the load should the overhead hoist, supporting structure or below the hook lifting devices fail: a)In the equipment storage area, on or about 02/09/99: Underhung hoist did not have the maximum rated load capacity posted on jib. Employees exposed to a struck-by hazard. b)Throughout the plant, on or about 02/09/99: Thirty one underhung hoists did not have initial load tests conducted and recorded. Employees exposed to struck-by hazards. ABATEMENT NOTES: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is to post the rated load capacities on all hoist structures and conduct load tests of the installed systems within the work place as per ASME B30.16, 1987 for overhead hoists. Abatement certification must be submitted for these items.
