Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:
The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment
which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely
to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that
employees were exposed to:
(A) In the fabrication shop area two press brakes, a Pacific 300
ton,SN 1870 and a Pacific 200 ton,SN 2195, were used to bend and
form metal by two operators who placed their hands within 1 inch of
the point-of-operation that was not safeguarded. One feasible and
acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to: implement
an effective "Safe Distance" Safeguarding Program as describe in
ANSI B11.3 1982, Safety Requirements for Construction, Care, and
Use of Power Press Brakes. Elements of the program include: (a)
Exposure prevention procedures (b) Training (c) Retraining (d)
Supervision (e) Periodic inspections.
