Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a struck-by hazard from a falling load: a) Steel Storage Area - The 3/8" wire rope on the R&M electric hoist was used with notable kinks along its length as well as crushed strands. ABATEMENT NOTE: One feasible and acceptable abatement for this hazard is to replace the damaged wire rope and implement a regular inspection procedure for the wire rope as well as the entire hoist as recommended by the manufacturer.
