Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to a potential fire/explosion hazard from improper storage of incompatible chemicals in a confined location: a) Quality Assurance Laboratory - Two (2) one gallon containers of concentrated sulfuric acid (Fisher Scientific) were stored with three containers of 37 hydrochloric acid solution (Fisher Scientific) in Cabinet No. 9 located underneath the laboratory fume hood. Additionally, within this same cabinet there was a one gallon container of 69.9 nitric acid (Fisher Scientific) stored with a container of 99.9acetic acid (Fisher Scientific). These chemicals together have caused temperatures and pressures to increase and have exploded. b) Quality Assurance Laboratory - A container of 99.5potassium permanganate crystals (Fisher Scientific) was stored with a container of 99.5glycerin liquid (Fisher Scientific), in a cabinet above the tabletop to the left of the entrance doorway. These chemicals together ignite on contact. c) Waste Treatment Plant Laboratory - A one gallon container of muriatic acid (Buckmans) was stored with two containers of sulfuric acid (Fisher Scientific). These chemicals together have caused temperatures and pressures to increase. ABATEMENT NOTE: Abatement may be achieved by storing the incompatible chemicals in separate storage cabinets or by separation of the chemicals through the use of partitions and/or barriers within the same cabinet. No abatement certification or documentation required.
