Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a potential fire/explosion hazard from improper storage of
incompatible
chemicals in a confined location:
a) Quality Assurance Laboratory - Two (2) one gallon containers of
concentrated sulfuric
acid (Fisher Scientific) were stored with three containers of 37
hydrochloric acid
solution (Fisher Scientific) in Cabinet No. 9 located underneath the
laboratory fume
hood.  Additionally, within this same cabinet there was a one gallon
container of 69.9
nitric acid (Fisher Scientific) stored with a container of 99.9acetic
acid (Fisher
Scientific).  These chemicals together have caused temperatures and
pressures to increase
and have exploded.
b) Quality Assurance Laboratory - A container of 99.5potassium
permanganate
crystals (Fisher Scientific) was stored with a container of 99.5glycerin
liquid (Fisher
Scientific), in a cabinet above the tabletop to the left of the entrance
doorway.  These
chemicals together ignite on contact.
c) Waste Treatment Plant Laboratory - A one gallon container of muriatic
acid
(Buckmans) was stored with two containers of sulfuric acid (Fisher
Scientific).  These
chemicals together have caused temperatures and pressures to increase.
ABATEMENT NOTE: Abatement may be achieved by storing the incompatible
chemicals in
separate storage cabinets or by separation of the chemicals through the
use of partitions and/or
barriers within the same cabinet.
No abatement certification or documentation required.
