Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards
that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that
employees were exposed to: multiple injuries from an explosion hazard of
the cure molds
Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method is to:
1. Prohibit storage of flammable or combustible liquids or other materials
in the area from
which the compressors could pull fumes.
2. Use a nitrogen cure.
3. Equally tighten the hinged mold bolts to the appropriate tension.
4. Provide sufficient overpressure protection for the mold by providing
pressure relief
device(s) in the rim incorporated with pressure and/or temperature
sensitive control(s) that
will shut down the air supply to the tire once an excessive pressure
and/or temperature is
reached in the tire. The pressure relief device(s) should be sized and set
to relieve so that the
pressure retaining components of the mold, including the rim, will  not be
stressed greater
than the allowable stress of the materials of fabrication.
