Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to hazard of fine: (a) In the plating area, employees are exposed to the hazard of fire in that oxidizers, including chromic acid flakes were stored with combustibles, such as cardboard boxes, and other paper products. Employees are allowed to smoke in this area. Among others, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to provide a separate storage area for oxidizers which is removed from flammables, combustibles, and other products which would be reactive with oxidizers. The employer shall not permit smoking in areas where oxidizers are stored. "No Smoking" signs must be posted in those areas. Abatement Note: Abatement certification is required for this item (see enclosed "Sample Abatement-Certification Letter").
