Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a.)Employees involved in moving the Navy vessel USS New Jersey were exposed to the hazard of being struck by a wire rope line while working in the bight of the line, on or about 10/26/98. Among other methods, one acceptable method of correcting this hazard would be to educate employees of the hazard, develop rules which prohibit employees from working in the bight, and ensure that rules are enforced.

Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that: a.)Employees involved in moving the Navy vessel USS New Jersey were exposed to the hazard of uncontrolled movement of a load due to the use of manila line as a stopper which was exposed to damage from contact with wire rope, on or about 10/26/98. Among other methods, one acceptable method of correcting this hazard would be to use a synthetic line stopper located away from areas where it may be subject to damage.
