Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: The spray painters were exposed to hazardous levels of 2-Pentanone vapors while using the chemical as a solvent to clean the floors in the spray painting areas. The 15 minute short-term exposure limit levels detected ranged from 495.3 ppm to 902.9. These exposure levels were approximately 2.0 to 3.6 times the ACGIH recommended level of 250 ppm as a short-term exposure limit. This level was established to reduce acute exposure to 2-Pentanone which has been shown to cause narcosis, central nervous system depression, headache, nausea, dizziness, vomiting, incoordination, and irritation of the eyes and respiratory passages. Sampling was conducted on five employees, on November 14, 1996. Feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard could include, but are not limited to: 1.Increase the number (frequency) of air changes per hour for general dilution ventilation; 2.Increase the volume of outside air entering into the workplace with each air change; 3.Install a larger and/or more efficient local exhaust ventilation system; 4.Use long handeled sponges, mops, etc. to increase the distance between the chemical source and the route of exposure (nose, eyes, mouth and/or skin).
