Section 5(a)(1): of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm in that employees were exposed to crushing hazards: a) Front Bay - Employees use the middle, double post hydraulic frame contact lift to elevate automobiles. (1) The lift was not marked with its rated load capacity. (2) An automatic mechanical device was not provided to hold the lift in the fully extended position at the rated load capacity. Thus exposing employees to injury from being struck by falling loads. b) Front Bay - Employees use a Quikway, hydraulic, frame contact lift to elevate automobiles. (1) The lift was not marked with its rated load capacity. (2) An automatic mechanical device was not provided to hold the lift in the fully extended position at the rated load capacity. Thus exposing employees to injury from being struck by falling loads. c) Side Bay - Employees use a Globe, double post, hydraulic, frame contact lift to elevate automobiles. (1) The lift was not marked with its rated load capacity. (2) An automatic mechanical device was not provided to hold the lift in the fully extended position at the rated load capacity. Thus exposing employees to injury from being struck by falling loads. d) Lower Shop - Employees use two Gilboard semi-hydraulic, frame contact lifts to elevate automobiles. (1) The lift was not marked with its rated load capacity. (2) An automatic mechanical device was not provided to hold the lift in the fully extended position at the rated load capacity. Thus exposing employees to injury from being struck by falling loads. ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct these hazards is to mark the rated capacity on the lifts and to provide an automatic mechanical device to hold the lift in the fully extended position at the rated capacity. NOTE: ABATEMENT DOCUMENTATION REQUIRED
