Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falling through ladderway floor openings as a result of poor lighting: Location: Caisson #171 On or about 8/5/98, a) 14 of the 16 chambers of Caisson #171 were not provided with lighting. The employer did not provide temporary lighting for employees inspecting the caisson. AMONG OTHER METHODS, ONE FEASIBLE AND ACCEPTABLE ABATEMENT METHOD TO CORRECT THIS HAZARD IS: To provide lighting that conforms to the current recommended illuminance ranges described in ANSI/IES RP-7-1991. NOTE: The employer is required to submit abatement certification for this item in accordance with 29 CFR 1903.19.ce
