Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: In the dip tank or metal degreasing area drums of hydrochloric acid and thermosalt 311 which is an oxidizer were stored within 10 feet of each other. Hydrochloric acid reacts with oxidizers to generate a highly toxic chlorine gas.(Reference: National Fire Code Vol. 3 1971-72, 49-129, 49-199 or Chemical Safety Data Sheet SD-39 or SD-42. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method to correct this hazard is to separate the chemicals and store in cool, well ventilated place.
