Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
At the workplace in building #2 containing the Auto Forges, the employer
did not protect
employees from the recognized hazard of exposure to allergens and
microorganisms in die
lubricant contaminated with gear oil.  These allergens are produced and/or
released when the
contaminated die lubricant is sprayed into the hot Auto Forge causing
smoking and atomization
of the contaminated die lubricant.  Some methods of protection for
employees would be:
1) Reduce the amount of oil contamination and microorganisms in the Auto
Forge(s) die
lubricant to levels recommended by the manufacturer of the die lubricant.
a) Investigate and repair the source of gear oil leaks into the auto
forge(s) die lubricant
to reduce the amount of oil contamination to a level recommended by the
manufacturer
of the die lubricant.
b) If gear oil leaks on the Auto Forges cannot be repaired to
satisfactorily reduce gear
oil contamination of the die lubricant to a level recommended by the die
lubricant
manufacturer, install effective oil removing equipment, such as oil
coalescing units, on
the Auto Forges to accomplish this task.
c) Discard spoiled Auto Forge die lubricant.  Clean and disinfect the Auto
Forge die
lubricant systems (pits, hoses, mixing vats, etc.) to prevent
contamination of replacement
die lubricant.
d) Monitor the level of gear oil contamination of the die lubricant on a
weekly basis in
order ensure contamination of the die lubricant with gear oil does not
exceed levels
recommended by the manufacturer of the die lubricant.
e) Monitor the level of microorganism contamination of the Auto Forge die
lubricant on
a weekly basis.  If the level of microorganism contamination rises above
the
level
recommended by the die lubricant manufacturer, use biocides to reduce the
level of
contamination.
2) Set up the die lubricant spray system so that the die lubricant is not
recirculated, thus
eliminating the use of contaminated die lubricant in the Auto Forges.
