General-duty citation text
Section 5(A)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to employees employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees: 8190 NW 197th St., Miami, State School LL, Building D: On September 3, 1999, employees were directed employees to walk on an inadequately installed joist and girder system and remove rigging from a load of metal decking placed on said system. This open web steel joist and girder system was inadequately installed because the joists were only tack welded and horizontal bridging was not installed although the blueprints required complete installation including final welds and horizontal bridging prior to the placing of any loads on the system. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard is for the employer to completely install the joists with final welds and installation of all bridging and cross bracing before placing any loads on the joists, as specified in the Vulcraft Blueprints and Recommendations for handling and erecting Vulcraft steel joists and joist girders, File No. 68-9- 0379. PLEASE NOTE: CERTIFICATION OF ABATEMENT IS NOT REQUIRED FOR THIS VIOLATION.
