Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of falls, the hazard of being struck by the moving elevator car, and the hazard of having parts of their body caught in the sheer point created by the elevator moving between floors, resulting from inappropriate installation of an elevator: a)Elevator #3, Floor 18: The full width of the landing opening was not protected to its full height with doors, on or about 8/19/98. b)Elevator #3: Elevator car gate was not provided with a car gate electric contact, on or about 8/19/98. Abatement note: One feasible and acceptable method of abatement to correct the hazards is to comply with ASME A17.1, Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators, Part 19, Elevators Used for Construction, Rule 1900.6 Hoistway Doors and Gates, and Rule 1902.7 Car Doors or Gates.
