General-duty citation text
Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the conditions listed below: Pump Craft Inc, 224 W Mt Pleasant Rd, Zachary LA - Machine Shop. On or about 14 Jun 99, the employer directed an employee to machine the inside of a 1500 lbs bearing housing on a LeBlond horizontal lathe. While aligning the housing, it was secured by the 4 jaws which were holding the housing by an approx 1" wide rim that existed on the shaft opening on both sides of the housing. The housing slipped from/fell from the jaws and exposed the employee to the hazards and injuries related to being caught by and struck by the falling housing. a) Among other methods, some feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are: 1. Install additional devices, such as clamps, on the chuck to secure the work. 2. Assure that the employee has met all training requirements for the position and type of work to be performed. 3. Utilize other indicating devices that incorporate remote read-out devices. 4. Utilize other methods and/or equipment for machining the interior surfaces of the bearing housing.
