Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: a) West Wall, Exterior Side of Building - On or about May 11, 1998, one employee was exposed to the hazard of falling approximately eight feet to the ground below while standing on the midrail of the guardrail system on the Brambles (s/n 19031) Self Propelled Aerial Work Platform. This condition last existed on May 11, 1998. Among other methods, one feasible and useful method to correct the hazard is to develop, implement and enforce a work rule such as stipulated in American National Standards Institute A92.5-1992 "American National Standard for Boom-Supported Elevating Work Platforms." 7.11.1 - Personnel shall maintain a firm footing on the platform floor while working therein. Use of planks, ladders, or any other device on the aerial platform for achieving additional height or reach shall be prohibited. No abatement certification or documentation is required for this item.
