Section 5(a)(1) of the occupational safety and health act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to falls: roof decking was placed on unsecured open web steel joist. In an attempt to move the bar joist 2 bundles of decking and the employee who was standing on the joist fell to the ground. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable method to correct this hazard would be to properly space and secure bar joist, and install bridging on all open web steel joist prior to placing loads on them. This information is available in Canam Steel Corporation "solutions and service" joist catalog dated 1997 page 38 section 6 that states: No load other than the weight of one erector are allowed on the joist until ALL bridging is completely installed and ALL joist ends are attached. Location:John Nichols School, Middleboro, MA Serious injury occurred when an employee fell 16 feet to the ground while working on unsecured bar joist, which were pulled from their bearing causing the collapse of three bar joist and two bundles of decking that were placed on those unsecured bar joist.red
