Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free of recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to : a. Employee(s) were exposed to the hazards of "hot material" when approximately 1000 degree celsius iron rich material was emptied into the #2 Kiln pit containing water. Feasible and useful abatement methods for reducing these hazards include, but are not limited to, the following: 1) Develop and implement a safe work practice to eliminate employee exposure to hot material during the "by-pass" operation. 2) Install continuous water flow line into the bunker to ensure that the water level is maintained.
