North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety
and Health Act of North Carolina:  The employer did not furnish
each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of
employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely
to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that
employees were exposed to: Struck by/falls
a)Jobsite, collapse of roof truss system - sufficient
temporary and or permanent bracing was not installed or
maintained on roof trusses in accordance with
recommendations from the Truss Plate Institute or
recommendations from the truss manufacturer concerning
bracing of wood trusses - on roof trusses installed on
the Macedonia Baptist Church under construction where
insufficient bracing or bracing removed prior to unifying
the truss system and where mechanized equipment was
inappropriatley used caused truss collapse on 13 May 1998
resulting in one employee falling approximately 22 feet
to the plywood floor sustaining a serious work related
injury from the fall and being struck by truss
components.
"Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable
abatement method to correct this hazard is to brace
the top, web and bottom chord plates of the trusses
as they are erected with lateral, diagonal and
cross bracing in accordance with recommendations
published by the Truss Plate Institute and the wood
truss manufacturer and as specified by the building
design. Additionally, avoiding the use of
mechanized equipment as a means of plumbing and
trueing the truss system components and never
removing the bracing until the system is unified.
