North Carolina General Statute 95-129(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of North Carolina: The employer did not furnish to each of his employees conditions of employment and a place of employment free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees, in that employees were exposed to crush injuries: a)jobsite -- on or about 5:00 PM on 07/08/98, employees were installing 44' 5" long and 49' 5" long 2X4/2X6 parallel chord trusses on a 3750 square foot, 1 story building, when the roof trusses collapsed. Temporary bracing was only in place on both truss ends at the exterior walls and 1 location in the middle of the trusses. One feasible method of abatement, among others, is to follow the Truss Plate Institute HIB-91 Summary Sheet commentary and recommendations for handling and bracing metal plate connected trusses. Recommended temporary brace spacing is 6' for trusses 32'- 48' long, and 5' for trusses 40' - 60' long.
