Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to: corrosive liquids that were likely to be splashed in eyes and on the body. a) Ageing Process Area: The eye wash station was not equipped with an on/off valve that was designed so that the water flow remained on without requiring the use of the operator's hands. Employees were exposed to splash hazards from corrosive mixtures containing 50 sodium hydroxide. b) Ageing Process Area: The shower that was provided for quick drenching of the body in the area where employees were exposed to splash hazards from corrosive mixtures containing 50sodium hydroxide, was not provide with an on/off valve that was designed so that the water flow remained on without requiring the use of the operator's hands. Among other methods, possible feasible and acceptable abatement method(s) to correct this hazard are: A) Replace the control valve of the eye wash station with one that is capable of providing continuous flow once it has been activated in on mode, without the use of the operator's hand. B) Replace the control valve of the emergency shower with one that is capable of providing continuous flow once it has been activated in on mode, without the use of the operator's hand.
