11 NMAC 5.2.9
Section 50-9-5(A), NMSA 1978 (New Mexico Occupational Health and Safety
Act):  Every
employer shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of
employment which
are free from recognized hazards that are causing or are likely to cause
death or serious physical
harm to his employees.
Correctional Officers and Medical Services personnel who treat and care
for inmates are
exposed to the hazard of being infected with tuberculosis (TB) through
contact with
inmates who have suspected or confirmed TB.  Feasible and useful abatement
methods
for reducing this hazard, as recommended by the Centers for Disease
Control are:
1)  Conduct initial and annual risk assessments to evaluate the risk of TB
transmission so that appropriate infection control interventions can be
developed;
2)  Develop and implement a written TB exposure control plan that is
comprehensive.  The plan should include early identification protocols for
inmates, employee protection, employee PPD, employee training, engineering
controls used such as ventilation, and employee exposure follow up
procedures;
3)  Conduct employee training specific for TB to ensure their knowledge of
such
issues as the hazards of TB, its transmission, signs and symptoms,
appropriate
medical surveillance and therapy, and the site specific protocols for the
Detention
Center.on
