Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to a crushing hazard from steel storage shelves not anchored
to the floor.
a)  Steel Storage Shelves, Storage Area - Shelves holding the majority of
the weight on
the top shelf were not anchored to the floor to prevent them from tipping
over when
employees are loading/unloading them.  These shelves hold pallets of
merchandise
weighing up to 1500 pounds each.  The shelves are three high with the
majority of the
weight being stored on the top shelf.
ABATEMENT NOTE:  One feasible and acceptable method to be taken by the
employer to
correct these hazards would be to comply with the recommendations of the
manufacturer or the
American National Standard  A Code of Safety Practices for the Use of
Industrial and
Commercial Steel Storage Racks, ANSI MH16.2-1984, section 1.4.
Abatement certification required within 10 days after abatement date.
The certification
shall include a statement that abatement is complete, date and method of
abatement, and
states employees and their representatives were informed of this abatement.
