General-duty citation text
29 CFR 1960.8(a): The employer did not furnish each employee employment and a place of employment which was free from recognized hazards that were causing or were likely to cause death or serious physical harm: (a) Employees working at checker stands on the cash registers have a mean level of 23.1 footcandles of illumination from the overhead light globes. The Illuminating Engineering Society of North America's 1981 Lighting Handbook in Figure 2-2 for merchandising sales transaction areas specifies for the Category E work that a level of 50 to 75 footcandles be provided. Among other methods, one feasible and acceptable abatement method, but not limited to this, to correct this hazard would be to provide adequate illumination by installing the correct type and size of light bulbs.
