On 4/12/1999,  employees were installing wood trusses with a span of 80
feet and weighing
635 lbs each onto 2 column supported steel "I" beams. The trusses were not
adequately braced
laterally or diagonally resulting in the trusses collapsing, injuring one
employee.
Among other feasible and acceptable methods to correct this hazard are:
1. Install lateral and diagonal bracing as required.
2. Follow the Truss Plate Institute Summary Sheet, HIB-91 (Handling,
Installation, and
Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses) during the erection and/or
installation of all wood
truss systems.
3. Follow the Truss Plate Institute booklet HIB-91 (Handling,
Installation, and Bracing
Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses) during the erection and/or
installation of all wood truss
systems.
4. Follow the commentary and recommendations as supplied by the
manufacturer.ns
