Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employmnent and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to:
On or before August 30, 1999, employees were exposed to serious burns from
molten metal
being poured into centripetal molds should the molten metal miss the fill
hole in the mold. The
rotating mold would throw the molten metal in lateral directions. On
August 30, 1999 two
employees were severely burned while pouring molten metal into a rotating
centripetal mold
which missed the filler hole on the mold who were splashed by
approximately 710 lbs of molten
metal.
Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable methods to
correct the hazard:
(a) to install a curb around the top edge of the lid of the mold housing
extending sufficiently
high to contain a spill or splash and to be sufficiently wide to cover the
seams between the
bottom of the lid and the sides of the housing.
and
(b) to install a collar around the fill opening in the lid of the mold
housing of sufficient height
to contain any spillage of moltem metal which would otherwise be laterally
thrown out of the
mold housing.
