Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment
which were free from
recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious
physical harm to
employees in that employees were exposed to: in that employees were
exposed to falls from
elevation and/or crushing injuries from the collapse of improper temporary
bracing of wooden
roof trusses.
(1) Construction site of office building 6 on Howard Lane in Fayetteville,
Georgia:
Workers setting and installing thirty 43' span metal plate connected wood
trusses on a
commercial building, were exposed to the hazard of collapsing trusses due
to insufficient
bracing. On or about December 29,1999.
Among other methods, three feasible and acceptable abatement methods to
correct this
hazard is to:
(1). Provide adequate training to ensure that each employee acquires the
knowledge and
skills of truss erection so that they understand how to correctly set and
install temporary
bracing safely on metal plate connected wood trusses.
(2). Ensure that each employee follows the practices for safe installation
of wood roof
trusses detailed in the HIB-91, Commentary and Recommendation for Handling,
Installing, and Bracing Metal Plate Connected Wood Trusses, before the
erection begins.
(3). Provide and post a copy of the truss warning poster on the site.
