Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to the hazard of being struck by the load should the overhead hoist, jib crane or bridge rail fail: a)On or about 3/23/01, the following overhead hoists had a broken upper limit device lever: 1.Dept. 17, end of Wolverine Line, a Budgit 1/2 ton overhead hoist had a broken upper limit device lever. Among other methods, several feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct this hazard are to: 1.Repair or replace the upper limit device lever. 2.Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the hoists in accordance with ANSI B30.16, 1987 Overhead Hoists. b)On or about 3/23/01, the following jib cranes and bridge rails would drift and there was no rated load capacity markings on the rail: 1.Dept. 17, end of Wolverine Line, an Abell-Howe jib crane would drift when released by the operator. 2.Dept. 17, Packaging Area, a bridge rail with a Dayton 300 lb. overhead hoist attached had no rated load capacity markings on the rail. Among other methods, several feasible and acceptable abatement methods to correct these hazards are to: 1.Adjust/repair jib structure within level tolerances to prevent them from drifting when released by the operator. 2.Mark the rated load capacity on the main structure. 2.Conduct frequent and periodic inspections of the jib crane and bridge rail in accordance with ANSI B30.11-1973 Monorail Systems and Underhung Cranes.
