Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970: The employer did not furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from recognized hazards that were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to employees in that employees were exposed to being crushed: (a) At the Worksite - 3150 Hempstead Tpke - Employees with the job title of mechanic who use a Challanger automobile lift to raise cars, could not fully extend the lift to allow the safety locking device to engage. This exposed the employees to being crushed in the event of sudden failure of the lift's hydraulic system; On or about 09/15/00 ABATEMENT NOTES: Among others,several feasible and acceptable methods to reduce the hazard is to : 1. Instruct and train employees in the proper use of the automobile lift. 2. Conduct perodic inspections to insure the lift is being used correctly. 3 Post the manufactures operating manuals in the service area for information and reference. 4 The hazard is reasonably foreseeable. The lack of safety devices is a recognized industry hazard. Reference ANSI B 153.1 Safety requirements on automobile lifts. Section:5.6.2.16 Pg 8 A search of the OSHA standards has been conducted and there are no applicable standards.
