Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to potential hazards of fires and/or explosions because the
wood dust collection
system was not designed, constructed and maintained according to
established safety and health
standards.
Location: 3 Chestnut Street, Suffern, NY
On or About 07/01/99
a) The wood dust collection system was deficient in that interior ducts
were not protected by a
spark detection and suppression system, exhaust air was recycled back into
the building without
protection of a explosion suppression systems or abort dampers, the
cyclone collector was not
protected by explosion vents, the cyclone collector was located inside the
building
and not
adjacent (within 10 feet) to a exterior wall and not vented with straight
ducts with explosion
vents or provided with a explosion suppression system,
ABATEMENT NOTE: Among other methods, one feasible and accepted abatement
method to
correct this hazard is to:
a) Design, construct and maintain the dust collection system in accordance
with established
safety and health standards such as the National Fire Protection
Association (NFPA) Standard
# 664  "Prevention of Fires and Explosions in Wood Processing and
Woodworking Facilities"
NOTE: The employer is required to submit abatement certification for this
item in accordance
with 29 CFR 1903.19.ce
