Section 5(a)(1) of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970:  The
employer did not
furnish employment and a place of employment which were free from
recognized hazards that
were causing or likely to cause death or serious physical harm to
employees in that employees
were exposed to falling  loads and/or lift parts:
(a)  Facility:  Employees were exposed to falling loads and/or lift parts
from the
hydraulic Temco (T-41202b-89) auto lift.  The lift was not equipped with
an operational
safety latch to hold the lift in the event the lift failed and load
dropped.  This condition
exposed employees to injury from being struck by falling loads and/or lift
parts.
Among other methods, the following are feasible and acceptable abatement
methods to
correct this hazard:
1)  Institute a preventative maintenance according to manufacturers
specifications.
2)  Maintain automatic mechanical device to hold the lift.
3)  Provide training to employees on the proper use of the auto lift.
4)  Ensure lifts are marked with their rated load capacity.
5)  Display the lift operator instruction in a conspicuous location.
ANSI B153.1 describes industry accepted methods to control hazards related
to auto lifts.
